i've never roleplayed before but it seems so popular... how does it work?

hey, welcome.
difficult question that, its kinda like asking a fish how it swims... basically you just make a character, immerse them into the situation and then go with it, if you take a look at the roleplaying boards... which i have oh-so helpfully made unavailible to guests *slaps forehead before going off to rectify this* you can see some fine examples of roleplaying
Edit: I have made the changes...

some of those posts are VERY lengthy... would we be required to write so much?
that's basically it right? writing... ..err pretending to be at a particular place, and imagining what would it be like to be in such environments ...and people/creatures there?

nope, there is no length requirement, neither is there are requirement on how literate you are, you can tell your side of the story via speech marks or by using *'s to denote actions.
but yes, that is basically it, writing the situation from your character's perspective. one rule to note is that godding is forbidden (i.e. your character cannot be unreally powerful, neither can they automatically hit someone - you would say for instance that your character threw a punch and it is up to the recipient to say whether their character dodges and what happens to them afterwards)

what do you mean by "denote actions"?

for instance: *glomps* the bits inside stars are actions, it is however recomended for RP'ing that you dont just put *glomps* if you character does so, make it alittle more detailed i.e. *<character name (yours)> glomps <character name (other)>*

Edit: I just noticed that Kalisana asked the question I'm replying to like AGES ago, but this goes for all people who are unsure about whether they want to join or not, really:
Yep. I haven't got a clue of who you are anything, but lots of people find that roleplaying improves their English (i.e. better grades, WOHOO!) and storytelling skills - if you need a reason like that or anything. Specially if you do write your posts such that they're "book-ish"; i.e. you've got descriptions, put dialogues in "...", and basically... uh... describe what you do. (Yeah, I'm crap at explaining stuff!) It's all about challenging yourself, really, just go for it - make a character, start posting and just see how it goes! We'll help you with all that, if you wanna.
