"True as that might be," Eleri retorted, swigging again, "some things need to be thought about. Like why scum like those vampires are still roaming the streets."
She drained her bottle and looked about for a bin. Upon not finding one, she gave up and put the empty bottle down on Wright's desk, making a mental note to get some kind of bin at some point.

Now that one Wright had thought about. He knew the answer too. And it depressed him. So he drank. Simple.
"This city is run by scum like that." He answered dryly. "You start thinking about it and it takes you down a road you don't wanna be on. You realise that there's a reason everything's like this and there's nothing you can do about it." Wright explained.
"So I'd rather not think about it than think about it and do nothing." It had worked for him so far, he thought.
Then again, looking around, maybe it wasn't...

Eleri dragged her chair over and sat down opposite Wright.
"Isn't not thinking about it and not doing anything the same thing? The only difference I can see is that one way you don't feel guilty and the other way you do. Sir." She added as an afterthought.
"Seems to me, sir, the reason things are like this is because there's nobody to stop it. Not really."

Wright had to admit, she pretty much had hit the nail on the head. Poor nail. But, the point was, if he didn't feel guilty, then, well, he didn't feel guilty. He liked it that way.
"Problem is, this city's run by a council of werewolves and vampires. Means, they cause problems in our streets, the council doesn't care." Wright sulked. "So if I've got a choice between feeling guilty or not feeling guilty, I know which one I'll pick..."

"But..." Eleri paused. She was going to need another drink if she was going to talk to her Captain like this. She reached around the desk and picked up another bottle.
"Do you mind, sir?" She asked. She didn't wait for a response and opened it anyway.
After a quick swig, she continued.
"But we're the police! We're supposed to stop problems in the streets." She smiled encouragingly. "The trick with the torch, for example. Very clever. I doubt I'd have thought of it."
She drank again, draining half the bottle, and pointed it at him accusingly.
"You, sir, are the Captain of this Force. You are supposed to do something about people like that." She gave him another look, although not one strong enough to warrent capital letters.
"I think you can do it, sir. I think... I think we can do it." She said seriously.
She finished her bottle and put it down on the desk next to the other one.
"No more of those though."

Wright sensed he was on thin ice. On one hand, he might have to do something. On the other hand, he might have to give up drink. Niether were good.
"Okay." He decided. "We try to clean up the streets. But we think small. There's only four of us. Besides, the Circle deal with most of the nasty stuff..." He said 'Circle' with the same tone anybody else might utter only the worse of curse words.
"But I get to keep drinking!" He stated, not ready to give it up.

"Yes, sir." Said Eleri with pride. "We start small. After all, there are only four of us. And small is better than nothing."
Then she gave Wright A Look.
"Not on duty, sir." She told him.

Wright winced under the Look assault. "Hey, who's the captain here!?" He cried defensively, hugging the bottle close to him. "Besides, if you don't like what I do, you can take it up with the council, and like they care what we do." He added. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been called to see the council. It must have been when he was first assigned the rank of captain, he figured. Nigh on ten years ago. And even then they'd been pretty disapproving of him.
"Right. You do realise we only have a few cells...and the torch trick won't work forever right?" Wright had a suspicion they'd need to get in contact with a prison to send their suspects to. A prison usually used to dealing with the Circle. A prison that would laugh when he turned in their first prisoners for years...
He didn't look forward to that. It'd involve paper work too. Maybe he could make Eleri do it...
"We need to get in contact with the prison, I guess. And some kind of court to press charges..." He muttered, rubbing his still aching head. It hadn't helped, being hit earlier. "This is going to get very complicated..."

Eleri nodded.
"No doubt it will at first, sir. But you'll get used to it pretty soon." She thought for a moment.
"If you can get me the phone number of a prison and a court that's used to dealing with vampires and lycans, I'll phone them now, sir." She offered. She had a feeling that dealing with people wasn't one of Wright's strong points.
She decided to drop the beer issue for now, but she was definately intoducing tea into the station, first chance she got.

Wright sighed. "Every court in the city knows about vampires and werewolves." He answered dryly. "But with...that..." He made a vauge, angry gesture out of the window, in the direction of Devil's Advocates, "...I don't see how we can make anything stick. Oh, sure, we can arrest minor vampires like these two. But how are we meant to change anything?"
Of course, Wright didn't know that right at that moment a team from the Circle and out of town police forces (they, for obvious reasons, hadn't gone to Wright) were storming the place in an attempt to stop the apocalypse.
He wondered over to Nolan's desk, and pulled out from under a pile of papers the Yellow Pages. "What?" He asked. "How else am I meant to find phone numbers?"

"That.... oh." Eleri said, realising the gesture meant the Devil's Advocates. "I'd forgotten about them."
It wasn't a hard thing to do, really. Not for Eleri. As far as she knew it hadn't been there when she left for London. And when she'd come back, well... She'd been considerably more vampiric than when she'd left and spent most of her time inside the house, caring for a terminally ill father, so a law firm had been the least of her worries.
It looked like they would feature quite heavily on her list of things to worry about now though.
She notices the Yellow Pages in suprise. She hadn't expected there to be one, and certainly not an up-to-date one. Nolan must be more organized than she'd thought.
"I didn't say anything, sir." She said politely.

"Fine." Wright sulked. "I thought you were going to tell me we were supposed to have a police directory or something."
They did in fact have a police directory, full of numbers that they deemed important enough to keep or vital contact information. Or, that was the idea. Wright had only written two numbers in it.
One was for the nearest pizza place. They didn't use it anymore. He couldn't afford it.
The second was their own. Wright had resisted writing '999' in there, no matter how funny he thought it'd be.
"Devil's Advocates. It's full of demons." Wright filled Eleri in, miserably, of course. "Demons. In my city. I can take werewolves. I'll even take vampires, if I have to. But demons!?"
It was enough to make him want another drink. Of course, it wasn't like it was hard for him to oblidge that desire.

"No, sir. It would be useful I suppose, but the phone book works just as well..."
Eleri looked shocked.
"... Demons?" She didn't remember demons. If she hadn't been sat down, she'd have fallen over.
"You mean there are... demon lawyers here now? Good Gods."
Part of her wished she hadn't finished that bottle of beer and was now looking for another one. The rest of her quashed it. She had to set an example.
"Well... we'll just have to deal with it." She said lamely after a minute.

Wright sighed. Deal with it? Where was her pessimism? Years of learning things were, to put it bluntly, crap, and not going to get any better? It was like she was an...optimist...or something. Wright shuddered at the idea.
"I don't think they do much actual lawyering, if it helps..." Wright told her with the stern conviction of a man who didn't want to be told 'lawyering' wasn't a real word.
"I mean, even if you try to arrest them, you have to be less concerned about them getting out of it on a technicality, and more concerned about being set on fire."

Eleri nodded.
"Well... if it helps, sir, I would class demons as pretty big stuff... so..." She trailed off and sighed. She hadn't even been awake very long, and already she was tired. And the beer hadn't helped.
"I think we should work on getting a court to press charges against those two in the cells." She said finally. It wasn't much, but it would be a start.
