Eleri sighed and rolled over, not opening her eyes. She had no idea what time it was or how long she'd been asleep and frankly, she didn't care.
After a few minutes, she opened her eyes and dragged herself out of bed. It was dark, but then, it always was.
I suppose I should be grateful for that... She thought wryly.
She showered and dressed, then sat back down on her bed, staring at the floor, wet hair hanging around her face. Then she stood up and shook herself.
No, you promised you would do this. You promised yourself and your father. You can't sit around being unemployed for the rest of your life. Get out there and do something. She told herself.
She stood up dried her hair, pulled her shoes on and grabbing her essentials, left the house.
Best find out what passes of law enforcement around here now. She thought.
She wandered down the street with only a vague direction of where she was going. After about five minutes, she resigned herself to the fact that she had no idea what direction she should be walking in and stopped someone.
"Excuse me, could you direct me to the police station?" She asked them.
Her request was met with laughter and the advice that the only thing worth going there for was a drink. She thanked them, puzzled, and walked away. Her next attempt to get directions was met with a similar response, although she managed to discern that the police operated from Coal Mine Road on the outskirts of the town.
With that in mind, she headed off.

Eleri pushed her front door open and flicked on the light. She'd decided it would be easier to simply fetch some black bags from her own house than trapse around the town. She could pick up a kettle and some teabags while she was at it.
She kicked the door shut and went upstairs. She retrieved a canvas bag from the bottom of her wardrobe. Then she went downstairs, unplugged her kettle, emptied it out and stuffed it into the bag, followed by the teabags, sugar jar and milk. Finally, she retrieved a roll of bin bags from the cupboard under the sink.
On a whim, she also grabbed a box of washing powder, a few old mugs and a couple of bars of soap. She had a feeling they'd probably come in useful.
That should be every....oh, phone. She thought. She dropped the bag at the bottom of the stairs and raced up them and into one of the spare rooms that had belonged to her brothers. From one of the many boxes she found there, she pulled out an old touch-tone landline and the relevant cables.
She went back down the stairs and placed the phone in the bag with the rest of her supplies.
She looked around her living room, making sure she had everthing she'd come for, and picked up the bag. On her way out of the door, she grabbed a spare coat, stuffed it into the bag, which was starting to bulge, and switched off the light.
Pulling the door shut behind her, she locked the house again and started of towards the Police House for the second time in a few hours.
