Myra blinked a couple of times at the questions, before lowering her head slightly as she thought her reply over. Questions on how competent she'd be in the field were something she'd expected, but the rather stark example had thrown her a little bit, especially as she knew she had a bit of a problem adapting when plans didn't work out the way they should - she was, however, quick thinking enough to make a new plan at a moment's notice.
There was no point in overthinking the answer too much though, she reasoned with herself, before looking up at Eleri and answering the questions.
"I know fairytales," she admitted, "Stories usually have a grain of truth in them, so I know a number of fictional accounts of vampires, lycans and demons, however before moving here I wouldn't've accepted them as fact." She pursed her lips momentarily, before clarifying a little, "I know a few things about the variations of vampires; blood lust, and such, and I know some of the basic details on what can be used to stop a lycan and have an idea of how violent they get when changed..."
As for the other question...
"I tend to work in plans," she said honestly, "If one goes wrong, I form another. I'll confess I can be left a little bewildered if something doesn't go according to plan, but I like to believe I'm quick-thinking enough to make something up to cover for myself. That being said, the situation would depend on what I could use around me to my advantage, and the area I was in..." Someone could tell her she was trapped with no weapon in front of a violent lycan, but unless she was in the area and could see what could be used to her advantage it was difficult to fully answer the question.
"I have enough confidence in myself to say that, if in that situation, I would work something out. It's a case of using what I do have to my advantage," she finished with a small shrug of her shoulders. She was aware she might not have answered that as fully as she could, but it was difficult to explain how she worked in an on-the-spot situation.

Eleri smiled encouragingly. "Mmm. There is a fair bit of truth to the stories, and it sounds like you know quite a lot already."She nodded acceptingly to the second response. She knew what Myra meant when she said it was difficult to explain, and considering the vague nature of the question she'd done well with her answer.
"To be honest, it sounds like you'd do well here." She said with a smile. Her secret hope that Myra would be unsuitable had come to nothing. Still, she suppose that sooner or later she was going to have to accept that other people were going to join up.
She looked across to Hadrian and Wright, who still hadn't moved his feet. "Anything either of you want to ask?" She asked them. She had written other questions, but after actually talking to Myra, she didn't see much of a point in asking them.

Hadrian shrugged a shoulder, a cheeky grin forming on his mouth from where he was leaning against the Captain's desk, tea in hand and doodling the chemical structure of some of his more.... interesting projects on a spare scrap of paper.
"How would you have taken out a 50 foot fire breathing Demon if you'd had some time - say half an hour - to think of a plan using the average stuff you'd find in the street?" He asked slyly, he was fairly interested in her answer, because if they could expect more demons like that, he'd rather not have to resort to helping the Captain blow up the police station again. Plus, it was just funny to take digs at the Captain when even he knew it had been a dumb idea. It worked though, that got some grudging respect.

Myra's eyebrow quirked slightly at the sudden question from Hadrian, before going over what he'd said.
"A firebreathing fifty foot demon?" she repeated, before her lips twisted into a grimace, "The size of the thing, and the firebreathing immediately nixes most forms of restraint you could find - most would probably be flammable, and I doubt you'd find anything powerful enough to restrain something fifty foot high. You could, perhaps, muzzle it in some way but you'd have to get close enough to actually bind the mouth shut, which puts you directly in line of the fire..." she blinked once or twice, before shrugging slightly,
"Short of obliterating the thing in one go, I'm not sure what to suggest. Possibly electricution via a major powerline if there was one nearby, provided you could reach the line without too much interference," she trailed off, giving Hadrian a look that suggested she wasn't entirely sure why he'd asked that particular question, but there you, she'd answered it nonetheless.
Myra was also very much aware this was probably the most she'd spoken all week. Who knew she could be so chatty when it came to the subject of destroying demons and apprehending lycans?

Hadrian snorted, "What do you know, you idea wasn't as half baked as I thought it was Captain. That's my questions done for. If you hire her, send her on down to the dungeon and I'll kit her out with the basics." he announced to the other two before leaving, he'd had a brainwave concerning a way of subduing Vampires without killing them. All he needed was a tazer and a few extra volts.

Eleri stifled a laugh at Hadrian's question. And she'd thought her question had been scary! Still, Myra had answered it remarkable quickly. She laughed again, properly this time, at the answer, and Hadrian's comment. "That's a first. Don't let it go to your head, mind." She told Wright sternly, although she was still smiling.
She nodded to Hadrian as he left. "Will do. Thanks, Hadrian." She called after him. She turned back to Wright. "Anything you want to ask, sir?" She asked him, half-dreading the sort of questions he might ask.

"Right then!" Wright, who had been silently watching, swung his feet off the desk and came to a stand, deciding it was his time to spring into action. "You got firearms training, great. Won't stop a vamp or a werewolf though. I need to know, can you hold your own in a fight? And I mean a proper fight, not hiding behind things shooting at other things."
Wright held quite a lot of disdain for guns. They didn't solve anything, made situations worse, were a lot more dangerous for humans than vampires or werewolves, and even if they did work, it meant you had a dead body instead of a suspect you could bang up in a jail cell.
"We're not in the buisness of killing people, Miss Everett. We arrest them. Even when they're not people but giant half dog monsters trying to eat you..." He caught Eleri's eyes. "Fifty foot demons are rare exceptions." He added, just for her. "If you want to shoot things, join the army. If you want to try and do some good in this city, join us. I'm not gonna lie to you, or do this whole interview dance, we need men. Well, women. Well, you know, whatever. We need people. If you know right from wrong, can handle yourself and have a heart beat, we want you."
"But I need to you to want to join. So let's get some things straight. Our job is to arrest those who breach the peace, bring them in, and let the courts sort it out. We're not thugs or vigilantes. We're coppers." He pointed to his significantly grimy and tarnished bronze badge. "This shield says what we do is right, it's what seperates us from all the other trouble makers in this city, but it's meaningless if we don't behave right. So this isn't about gunning down the bad guys. This is about protecting civilians," Wright never used the word 'innocents', nobody was innocent as far as he was concerned, "and keeping the peace."
"With that in mind, you still want in?"

Eleri stepped back and let Wright say his bit. She felt quite proud of him when he made speeches like that. That said, she had to give him a Look for the 'giant, half-dog monsters' comment. She just wished he acted like that more often, and kept his feet off the bloody desks! She smiled to herself all the same.
She tucked the stray hair behind her ear again and stood, arms folded, waiting for Myra's answer. She went over the list of things she'd have to do if Myra joined. They had uniforms - when the ones she'd ordered for the three of them arrived, she'd ordered some more in various sizes, just in case. There was bound to be one that fitted Myra...

Myra watched Wright silently as he spoke. The Captain was certainly an interesting man - outwardly, the way he'd been sat at his desk and the way the others spoke to him on occasion made him seem a little unrespectable. She hadn't really formed an opinion on him yet, due to her focus being on Eleri and the interview, but she was certainly impressed by the conviction and dedication he seemed to show in his words. He made some very true points as well, but it was easy enough for her to answer him.
"Yes," she said, before turning herself fully in her seat to face him. She didn't elaborate; she wanted the job, she wanted to be active. She had no desire for revenge, or vigilante missions, merely a hankering to understand the odder side of Edgehaven a little better and perhaps do some good in the process. She did, however, expand her response to cover whether or not she could hold her own without a gun.
"Firearms training was only something my father taught me to take my mind off...less cheerful circumstances," she explained, "As for holding my own in a fight; I haven't had any formal combat training, but gymnastics has given me enough muscle strength to ensure when I kick something it hurts. Quite a bit if I'm to believe my friend's account," she added with a small smile, "It's something I can look into, if you'd rather I had proper training." She had always been interested in martial arts classes, and now she had more free time to take some.

"NonoNO!" Wright waved his arms with irritation. "No proper martial arts classes! While they teach you all that making bird noises and waving your arms around the other guy will have smashed you in the face with a bottle. You learn from me. And possibly Sergeant Mortymer." Wright didn't hold much in high regard when it came to fighting. He'd learnt to street fight, to him everything, and he meant everything, was a weapon. There was no fighting dirty. When it came to a fight, you did what was neccesary. You sure as hell didn't instill some sense of honour in your combatants. It might sound good when you're wearing a dressing gown and training in a gym, but on the streets, it was useless.
"You got muscle, okay, that's good for running and swinging, but don't go expecting it to help much here. A werewolf'll throw you right across the room with one hand and scratch it's ass with the other..." A strong human was still no match for vampires or werewolves, Wright knew. "Only a moron would try to stand toe to toe with one." He glared at Eleri which said 'unless that particular person is your captain at which point you stay quiet and definitely don't snigger'.
"Alright, you're in." He decided. "See Sergearnt Mortymer to be sworn in and for your uniforms. She'll handle the paperwork. Then visit Corporal Beaumont in the basement and he'll probably get some wires crossed and blow you up. But he's supposed to give you your kit."
"Welcome to the Force."

There was a brief seconds silence, before Myra coughed slightly in an attempt to smother a chuckle,
"Bird noises," she said, with a small smile on her face, "I've never heard such an...interesting description of martial arts," she elaborated, before shrugging, "That's fine. I'll save myself the money on classes then." Myra certainly had no wish to face up to a werewolf in fighting, but she didn't think it was her place to tell her new boss that if she ever was in a position to face a werewolf, she'd be too busy finding something heavy, and if she was lucky, silver, to drop on it rather than attempting to kick it in the face.
Instead, she reached down and picked up her bag before standing up and giving Wright a small nod,
"Thank you," she said, before turning her head to look at Eleri and see what she had to do now. She was in, and almost immediately she felt a weight lift from her shoulders she didn't even realise had been there in the first place. A nice feeling indeed.

Eleri watched the exchange between Wright and Myra with interest. It was always fun watching the captain talking to new people. She nodded at the comment about fighting properly. That was one of the few things she agreed with her captain about - if you were going to fight, do it properly with whatever you can, never mind spending money on having a bloke in pajamas teaching you breathing exercises and, as Wright so eloquently put it, bird noises.
She stayed quiet until Wright mentioned being toe to toe with a werewolf. She couldn't help herself, and she snorted with laughter when he glared at her. "Also, it's not advisable to try climbing anything over two storeys high." She said, biting her lip.
She sighed again at the mention of paperwork. Still, maybe she could fob it off on Myra now. "Just a second." She said to Myra. She disappeared into the tea room again, rumaged about in a stack of boxes that were in there, and then emerged holding a neatly-folded plastic bag containing a uniform.
"That should fit, if my guess is right." She told Myra. "Now if you'll just come over here, I'll get you sworn in." She sifted through the drawers in her desk until she found the sheet with the oath on it. She remembered it fairly well, but she had a feeling Wright might lynch her if she got it wrong.
"Ok, repeat after me. I, [recruit's name], do solemnly swear by [recruit's deity of choice] to uphold the Laws and Ordinances of the city of Edgehaven, serve the public trust, and defend the subjects of His/Her [delete whichever is inappropriate] Majesty [name of reigning monarch] without fear, favor, or thought of personal safety; to pursue evil-doers and protect the innocent, laying down my life if necessary in the cause of said duty, so help me [aforesaid deity]. God Save the King/Queen [delete which is inappropriate]"
She finished, frowned and turned to Wright. "We should really update that oath." She commented. Still, she'd had to do it, so Myra was damn well going to.

Wright grinned, arms folded. "I don't know, I kinda like it. I swear by [recruit's deity of choice]." How any of them pronounced the square brackets so clearly is a mystery lost to time, but they did.
Originally, the oath had been because Wright was reading it off a scrap of paper without actually taking in what it said, but now he found it quite a good test of character. How recruits reacted to it said a lot about the recruit's themselves. If they repeated it word for word, they weren't thinking or being sarcastic. If they filled in the blanks, they were willing to do what they were told. If they pointed out how stupid it was, well, they had some brains...
Sure, so it made them look like a joke, but they were a joke to most people. And the best thing about a joke is that everybody thinks they're harmless. And Wright had plans to be anything but harmless for this city...

Myra took the bag with her uniform in, and hooked her arm through the handles before listening to Eleri recite the oath she had to repeat. It was...pretty basic, but she was somewhat amused by the clear difference between the text in square brackets and the text not in the brackets in her voice. There was an obvious problem though, she noted.
"As someone with no interest in religion, are there any objections to me subsituting [deity of choice] for Larissa Latynina?" she asked, glancing briefly between Eleri and Wright before continuing nonetheless.
"I, Myra Everett, do solemnly swear by Larissa Latynina to uphold the Laws and Ordinances of the city of Edgehaven, serve the public trust, and defend the subjects of Her Majesty Elizabeth without fear, favor, or thought of personal safety; to pursue evil-doers and protect the innocent, laying down my life if necessary in the cause of said duty, so help me Larissa Latynina. Save the Queen," she recited steadily, simply taking out religious references. It didn't seem fair to swear on something she didn't believe it - that would make the whole thing a lie. She paused for a second, before adding,
"If Larissa Latynina is a bit obscure, feel free to substitute her name for Terry Pratchett's."

Eleri nodded, raised an eyebrow at Myra's oath, and smiled. She couldn't quite decide whether she was being sarcastic or genuinly trying to avoid religious references. Still, she'd done it.
"That should be everything." She said, once Myra had finished. "Unless the Captain has anything to add, go on down to the basement and Corporal Beaumont will get you your kit." She glanced breifly at Wright, then indicated the door that Hadrian had left through. "Welcome to the EHPD."
